What to Expect at Your Lactation Consultation

Thank you so much for scheduling your visit with Southern Banks Baby! We want your appointment to be as smooth and helpful as possible, so here’s a quick checklist to help you prepare and know what to expect.

Before Your Appointment

  • Please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. This helps us stay on track and give every family the time they deserve.

  • Try to have your baby ready to eat about 30 minutes after we start. This gives us a chance to chat and assess your feeding routine together. But don’t worry if your baby gets hungry sooner — a small feeding is totally fine, and we’ll work with whatever your little one needs.

What to Bring

  • Bring your breast pump and all the parts you use at home (bottles, flanges, tubes, etc.). This helps me troubleshoot pump fit or function and make personalized recommendations.

  • Any breastfeeding supplies or feeding aids you currently use (nipple shields, nipple cream, supplements, etc.).

  • Your baby’s feeding log or any notes you’ve been keeping — if you have one.

During Your Visit

  • We’ll talk about your feeding goals, concerns, and history.

  • I will assess your breasts to check for any issues that might affect feeding, such as latch pain or milk flow concerns.

  • I’ll perform a gentle infant exam to observe oral function and overall feeding readiness.

  • I’ll observe a feeding session with your baby if possible, or help with pumping techniques if that’s your focus.

  • You’ll get personalized education, support, and practical tips tailored just for you and your family.

After Your Appointment

  • You’ll leave with clear next steps and resources to support your feeding journey.

  • I’m always just a message away if you have questions or need extra help between visits.
